Float Glass Furnace First Turnkey Plant

The above article describes TECO's first turnkey glass plant installation, which involved the building, the provision of utilities and equipment for the entire process. Since this installation, TECO has supplied 16 turnkey manufacturing plants.


Toledo, Ohio is the glass capital of the world, and Toledo Engineering Co., Inc. (TECO) is the premier glass industry engineer/contractor. The TECO group has designed and built over 1,000 glass melting furnaces in their 80 plus year history.

During the history of TECO and its affiliated companies, TECO has:

  • Designed/built 57 new float glass furnaces
  • Added design improvements and rebuilt 48 float glass furnaces
  • Designed/built 16 turnkey glass plants
  • Designed/built over 1,000 fossil fuel fired furnaces
  • Designed/built over 150 electric melting furnaces
  • Designed/built 20 batch plants
  • Modernized over 60 batch plants

1925 Toledo Engineering Co. was formed as an engineering and construction company and concentrated on designing and building glass melting furnaces.

1929 TECO was incorporated and became Toledo Engineering Co., Inc. (TECO).

1929 TECO designed/built its first large furnaces for sheet and plate glass for Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, MI.

1947 TECO designed and project-managed its first turnkey glass container plant for Cerveceria Moctezuma S.A., Orizaba, Mexico. The TECO group has designed/built 5 glass container plants.

1954 Elemelt, Ltd. of the UK was formed as an engineer/project manager pioneering in electric melting of glass.

1961 TECO designed/built the first recuperative 'E'-Glass furnace for United Merchants, Statesville, NC. A similar furnace for Johns Manville, Parkersburg, WVA followed shortly thereafter.

1964 TECO designed/built its first float glass furnace for Ford Motor Co. - Nashville, TN. To date, TECO has designed/built 57 new furnaces and has redesigned/rebuilt 46 furnaces for float glass application for a total involvement of 102 float glass furnace projects.

1964 TECO signed a licensing agreement with Elemelt, Ltd. for providing electric melt furnaces in North America.

1967 TECO designed/built its first cold top electric melt furnace for Knox Glass, Danielson, CT.

1968 TECO designed/built its first cold top electric melter for insulation fiber glass, which was installed at Owens Corning, Santa Clara, CA. The melter was designed for seismic conditions. TECO has designed/built 39 cold top electric melters for insulating wool fiber glass.

1970 TECO started to design/build batch plants for the glass industry. Today, TECO has the expertise to coordinate batch plant parameters with furnace parameters to achieve maximum glass quality. TECO has designed/built 20 new batch plants and modernized over 60 existing batch plants.

1970 TECO designed/built its first float glass plant for Guardian Industries, Carleton, MI. To date, TECO has designed/built 10 float glass plants on a turnkey basis for various glass manufacturers.

1970 TECO designed/built the container plant for Madera Glass, Madera, CA.

1972 TECO designed/built the world's largest batch plant for Ford Motor Co. at Tulsa, OK. The batch plant served two (2) large capacity float glass furnaces, which were of TECO design.

1975 TECO patented the SUPERFLUE®, which is a special flue system that improves regenerative furnace performance and efficiency, while prolonging the life of the regenerator.

1978 TECO designed and project-managed the first overseas float glass furnace and batch plant installation for Hankuk Glass, Kunsan, South Korea plant.

1984 TECO acquired Elemelt, Ltd., and formed TECO Europe. TECO Europe broadened its capabilities and scope and is now involved with glass furnace applications of all types and is now known as Tecoglas, Ltd.

1990 TECO formed ENVITCO for the purpose of designing/building vitrification systems for encapsulating hazardous waste.

2001 TECO designed/built its 43rd cold top electric melt furnace for the fiber glass insulation industry. The unit was installed at Knauf Fiber Glass, Shasta Lake, CA.

2004 Acquired ZEDTEC Ltd. ZEDTEC brings additional knowledge and know-how to the forehearth/conditioning segment of TECO's business. ZEDTEC forehearths utilize "Rapid-Cool" technology enabling greater flexibility and shorter lengths for a given capacity.

2004 Received Cardinal FG order for engineering and project management of a new plant for Durant, Ok. which was started up July, 2004.

2005 TECO received it's 12th order for a turnkey float glass plant. The plant is for Cardinal FG for Winlock, Wa. The plant is similar to the Cardinal FG Durant, Ok. plant.

2005 Received order from Knauf Fiber Glass for the 44th cold top electric furnace melting sodium borate fiberglass.
